Discover the Landes forest

A forest massif located in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region, the Landes forest extends over three départements: Landes, Lot-et-Garonne and Gironde. With a surface area of one million hectares, it is the largest artificial forest in Western Europe. Originally a natural forest, the Landes forest is now mainly man-made, with maritime pines accounting for the majority of its trees.

Discover the Landes forest and its region

During your stay in Sanguinet, take the opportunity to discover the Landes forest. The latter shapes the landscapes of the departments it covers, and is associated with the Atlantic Ocean, which it follows along the Côte d’Argent. The forest stretches from La Pointe de la Grave in the north to Hossegor in the south.
The Landes forest is home to a rich and diverse ecosystem. Fauna and flora are favoured by the forest’s diverse terrain. Ponds, bogs and streams support a wide variety of plant and animal species. Examples include deer, roe deer and European badgers. Wild boar also inhabit the forest, as do pheasants, woodcock and hares in many areas.
In terms of flora, pines account for the vast majority of trees found in the Landes forest. However, you can also come across oak trees that have managed to find their own way. Alder, birch, willow and holly can be spotted on the banks of streams and rivers.
The flora thus remains varied and plural despite the marked presence of the Landes Pine or Maritime Pine. Although there are many species of pine, only this one has taken root in the Landes soil. It is found throughout mainland France, with the exception of the Grand Est region, where it accounts for 10% of the total wooded area.

Must-do activities in the Landes forest

Perfect for active vacations, the Landes forest is home to numerous hiking trails, as well as bike paths for strolling in the shade of the pines. You can finish your walk with a swim in the lakes and ponds that wind their way through the Landes forest. If you prefer water sports, canoeing down the Leyre is the ideal activity for you.

In the heart of the Landes forest, you can also discover the Le Teich ornithological reserve in the Bassin d’Arcachon. There, a number of activities are offered in the fields of ornithology, teaching and photography. These include birdwatching accompanied by the Park’s naturalist, as well as guided tours and educational events.
