The Pilat Dune

The Dune du Pilat, also known as the Dune de Pyla, is one of Europe’s largest sand dunes.

It lies at the southern end of the Atlantic Ocean, near the town of Arcachon, in the Landes region of France.

The dune is around 3 km long, 500 metres wide and 110 metres high. It has been a protected natural site since 1968.

The Dune du Pilat is a unique and fascinating place, in constant evolution. Wind and ocean waves have sculpted this gigantic sand dune over the centuries, moving it an average of 15 meters per year. This dune is a breathtaking example of the power of nature.

The Dune du Pilat is also a place for contemplation. It offers a fascinating spectacle when the sun sets, illuminating the golden sands with incredible colors. You can enjoy the view from the top of the dune.

What to do around the Dune du Pilat?

Hiking on the Dune du Pilat

Discover the Dune du Pilat by taking advantage of its hiking trails offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Landes forest.

  • For the more athletic, there’s a 6km trail where you can discover paleosols, plants well adapted to this environment and perhaps even animal tracks.
  • Families can opt for an easier 3 km circuit on the dune by taking the stairs and then a stroll on the dune with a possible return with the baia bus.

Hikers can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views from the top of the dune. The hikes are not signposted and no refreshments are available along the way.

Swimming in front of the Dune du Pilat

The Dune du Pilat is also a popular bathing spot in summer, with a sandy beach sheltered from the waves.

There is also a supervised swimming area for children. Water sports such as surfing, paddleboarding and kitesurfing are also popular on the beach.
