A forest massif located in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region, the Landes forest<\/strong> extends over three d\u00e9partements: Landes<\/a>, Lot-et-Garonne and Gironde. With a surface area of one million hectares<\/strong>, it is the largest artificial forest in Western Europe. Originally a natural forest, the Landes forest is now mainly man-made, with maritime pines accounting for the majority of its trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Landes forest is home to a rich and diverse ecosystem. Fauna <\/strong>and flora <\/strong>are favoured by the forest’s diverse terrain. Ponds<\/strong>, bogs and streams <\/strong>support a wide variety of plant and animal species. Examples include deer<\/strong>, roe deer<\/strong> and European badgers. Wild boar also inhabit the forest, as do pheasants, woodcock and hares <\/strong>in many areas.
In terms of flora, pines account for the vast majority of trees found in the Landes forest. However, you can also come across oak trees <\/strong>that have managed to find their own way. Alder, birch<\/strong>, willow and holly can be spotted on the banks of streams and rivers.
The flora thus remains varied and plural despite the marked presence of the Landes Pine<\/strong> or Maritime Pine. Although there are many species of pine, only this one has taken root in the Landes soil.
